Alfred W. Delena

Steward of Innovation, Design, And Learning

Alfred Delena, a member of the Zuni (Shiwi) Tribe, is a lifelong learner, service-oriented striver, growth seeker, and a work in progress. His experience growing up on the Pueblo of Zuni, a rural Indigenous Reservation and community, coupled with the values his parents instilled in him, fuels his mission: ‘To serve those who serve others.’ He is dedicated to helping co-create and cultivate a nation that is more liberated, just, and equitable, a society that values people over profits, and a world that exudes and reconnects to the goodness of humanity.

He is keenly interested in human behavior and improving and elevating the health and well-being of individuals and communities. Before joining The Harwood Institute, Alfred worked in the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy, located within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS); volunteered as an assistant Track and Field coach with the Zuni High School Thunderbirds; and interned at the Emerson Collective, a social impact organization. He graduated from Stanford University with a BA in Human Biology and a minor with honors in Education.

Shortly after departing HHS, Alfred joined the Institute in December 2019 as Special Assistant to Rich Harwood before transitioning to his current role as Steward of Innovation, Design, and Learning. In this role, he leads and supports the design, execution, and learning of various engagements and experiences that teach people the Harwood approach and the Turning Outward practice.

Alfred enjoys running, watching films, listening to music and podcasts, being in nature, engaging in self-development, and finding moments of calm through mindfulness.
